Macau’s Judiciary Police (PJ) have busted a striking casino fraud scheme after arresting a former baccarat dealer and a gambler for allegedly swindling a local casino out of HK$1.76 million (approx US$226,000) over just two weeks.
Fraud Scheme: Delayed Bets on High-Payout Hands
The scam unfolded between May 25 and June 7 when the 25-year-old ex-dealer and a 38-year-old mainland Chinese gambler allegedly conspired during empty-dealer shifts. The dealer allowed the gambler to place "delayed bets" after the baccarat outcome was known, particularly exploiting a rare “banker wins with 6 points” payout (22× the bet). Bet sizes ranged from HK$5,000 to HK$15,000, netting fraudulent wins of HK$110,000 to HK$330,000 per hand.
Detection and Arrest
The scheme was exposed when casino security detected irregular betting patterns in surveillance footage. Authorities were notified on June 25, and both men were arrested the next day. During interrogation, it emerged that the duo had split their illicit gains but promptly lost the money through further gambling. The dealer, who began working at the casino in 2023, resigned on June 7, citing personal reasons.
Charges and Investigation Status
Both suspects have been forwarded to the Public Prosecutions Office and face charges of “fraud involving a considerable amount.” The Judiciary Police continue to investigate potential third-party involvement or other undisclosed operations.
Growing Scrutiny on Casino Security
The case has reignited industry discussion about the vulnerabilities of internal fraud in high-stakes gaming environments. While Macau is known for its tight security and regulation, incidents like this highlight the ongoing need for monitoring and preventive measures.
Casino operators are increasingly investing in surveillance AI and advanced fraud detection systems to curb such risks. Moreover, casino patrons are advised to exercise caution and only gamble at venues that are known for their strong oversight and transparency.
